Johnson-Su Compost Extracts (Liquid)

The Fastest Way to Introduce Living Biology to Your Soil

If dry amendments are the long game — rebuilding soil structure and mineral balance over seasons — liquid biological extracts are the short game. They are the fastest, most direct way to introduce a diverse, living microbial population into your soil right now, without waiting for compost to mature or organic matter to break down.

A single well-made Johnson-Su compost extract applied at the right time can introduce hundreds of millions of bacteria, fungi, protozoa and beneficial nematodes per millilitre directly into the root zone of your crop or pasture. These organisms begin working immediately — cycling nutrients, suppressing pathogens, extending root reach and building the biological relationships that healthy plants depend on.

This is not a fertiliser. It is a biological inoculation. And the difference between the two is the difference between feeding your plants and rebuilding the system that feeds them.

Better Biology, based in Woodford SE Queensland, produces Johnson-Su compost extract to order for farmers across SE Queensland — made fresh, tested under microscopy, and available for pickup at the farm or delivered direct to your gate.

What is Johnson-Su Compost Extract?

The Johnson-Su Bioreactor is one of the most significant developments in applied soil biology of the last two decades. Developed by Dr David Johnson and Dr Hui-Chun Su at New Mexico State University, it is a no-turn, fungal-dominant composting system that runs for a full 12 months before the compost is considered ready for use.

Unlike conventional thermophilic compost — which produces a bacterially dominant product through high-heat turning — the Johnson-Su process is designed from the ground up to cultivate fungi. The result is a biologically diverse, fungal-rich compost with a complexity and density of life that standard composting methods simply cannot replicate.

The extract is produced by suspending this mature compost in non-chlorinated water under carefully managed conditions, drawing the biological community into a liquid that can be applied through irrigation lines, spray equipment or as a direct soil drench. What goes into your paddock is the full soil food web — bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes and actinomycetes — in a form your soil can use immediately.

What Johnson-Su Extract Does for Your Soil

When you apply Johnson-Su compost extract, you are introducing a complete biological community — not a single species or strain, but the full functional spectrum of organisms that a biologically healthy soil contains.

Bacteria establish quickly in the root zone, processing organic matter and making nutrients available in plant-ready form. Fungal propagules begin colonising organic matter in the soil profile, building the mycelial networks that connect plants to minerals and water beyond the reach of roots. Protozoa graze on bacteria at the root surface, releasing nitrogen and other nutrients in plant-available form at exactly the point where the plant needs them. Beneficial nematodes regulate bacterial and fungal populations, cycle nutrients through the profile and suppress plant-parasitic nematode populations through competition.

Together these organisms begin rebuilding the nutrient cycling engine that synthetic agriculture has been bypassing — and in doing so, they start reducing your dependence on purchased inputs from the first application.

For SE Queensland farmers in the early stages of a regenerative transition, Johnson-Su compost extract is often the single most impactful product you can put in the ground. Biology moves fast when conditions are right. The extract gives it a running start.

Compost Extract vs Compost Tea — Why It Matters

Most farmers who have heard of liquid biological amendments know them as compost teas. There is an important distinction worth understanding.

A compost tea typically uses a small amount of compost in a large volume of water, brewed with strong aeration and sugar additions over 24–36 hours. The goal is to rapidly grow a large population of organisms. The problem is that this process favours fast-growing bacteria over slower-growing fungi, can go anaerobic if aeration is interrupted, and produces a product with a narrow biological profile that degrades quickly after brewing.

A compost extract uses a higher ratio of quality compost to water, extracts the organisms already present rather than trying to multiply them rapidly in a vessel, and produces a far more diverse biological profile — including the fungi, actinomycetes, protozoa and nematodes that compost teas rarely capture — with lower pathogen risk and greater stability in the hours after production.

At Better Biology we produce extracts, not teas. Every batch starts with our own Johnson-Su compost, uses non-chlorinated water, and is produced under carefully managed conditions. What leaves our farm is the full biological diversity of a functioning soil food web in concentrated liquid form.

Verified Biology — Every Batch Tested

Every compost batch is assessed under microscopy before we use it for you. We look for the presence of active fungi, bacteria, protozoa and nematodes and we do not release batches that do not meet our biological standards. Our Compost Results page shows actual test data from our compost batches — not marketing claims, real numbers from real soil.

We also produce and deliver locally. Serving farms within approximately two hours of Woodford means our extracts are applied within hours of production in most cases — not days later after interstate freight. Biology is alive and it behaves like anything alive. Freshness matters.

Volumes, Pickup and Delivery

Johnson-Su compost extract is available in 20 litre and 1000 litre volumes, made to order.

Pickup: Collect directly from our property at Woodford. We'll confirm your collection time once your order is placed and your batch is scheduled into production.

Delivery: We deliver across SE Queensland with a minimum purchase amount and for a delivery fee calculated at checkout based on your location. If you're outside the immediate region, contact us before ordering to confirm delivery options.

As all extracts are made fresh to order, please allow production lead time when placing your order. We'll confirm your expected ready date at time of ordering.

Subscription and Repeat Delivery — SE Queensland Farms

The most consistent results come from farmers who apply biological extracts regularly — typically three to four times per year for broadacre pasture, monthly for intensive horticulture, and fortnightly during critical growth periods for high-value crops.

Better Biology offers a subscription delivery model for farms within our service area. A subscription locks in your preferred product, volume and delivery frequency at a fixed price, ensures you never run out at a critical time, and gives you priority access to our production schedule during peak demand.
