How I Test My Compost

Every batch of compost, worm castings and extract I make is checked under the microscope before it's sold, using the Soil Food Web method. If a batch doesn't meet the standard, it isn't sold.

What I look for

• Bacteria and fungi: how much of each, plus the balance between them
• Protozoa: flagellates, amoebae and ciliates that release nutrients to plants
• Nematodes: the beneficial types, plus any root-feeders
• Warning signs: anaerobic conditions or disease organisms
